The National Audiovisual Council (CNA) expresses its deep concern over the recent slippages in public discourse and "strongly condemns" any form of pressure on the press.
"The National Audiovisual Council expresses its deep concern about the recent slippages in public discourse, manifested by threats and direct attacks against journalists and the journalistic profession, including the publication of manipulated recordings of a conversation not intended for public broadcast. CNA draws attention to the fact that intimidating representatives of the press, labeling them as "media assassins" or using contemptuous language against journalistic activity seriously contravene democratic values and European standards on press freedom and protection of journalists," CNA said in a statement posted on Facebook on Monday evening.
The freedom of expression does not include the right to threaten, defame or manipulate public opinion in an abusive way, undermining trust in the press, CNA points out.
At the same time, the Council recalls that, during election campaigns, it is all the more necessary to have a responsible public conduct, in a spirit of decency and respect for the fundamental institutions of democracy - among which the media occupy an essential place.
"CNA strongly condemns any form of pressure exerted on the press and calls on all public actors - regardless of their status - to contribute to strengthening a climate of dialogue, honesty and respect for journalism and its role in democratic life. The Council reiterates its commitment to ensure, by all legal means, respect for freedom of expression, personal dignity and the protection of professional journalism in Romania," CNA emphasizes.
