The natural growth of Romania's population remained negative (-9,065) in April this year, with the number of registered deaths being 1.9 times higher than that of live births, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to official statistics, in April 2025, the number of births decreased compared to April 2024, but increased compared to the previous month (March 2025), and the number of registered deaths increased compared to April 2024, but decreased compared to the previous month (March 2025).
In April 2025, birth certificates were registered for 10,462 children, up by 42 (+0.4%) compared to the previous month and down by 1,980 (-15.9%) compared to the same month last year.
The number of death certificates registered in April 2025 was 19,527 (10,100 for males and 9,427 for females), 2,043 fewer deaths than in March, which represents a decrease of 9.5% (-8.7% males and -10.3% females). The number of death certificates registered for children under one year of age in April 2025 was 61, down 22 from March 2025.
The number of death certificates increased by 1,016 (+5.5%) compared to April 2024, and the number of children under one year of age who died was 8 fewer in April than in the same month in 2024.
The natural growth was also negative in April 2024 (-6,069 persons).
In April 2025, 41.7% (8,143 deaths) of the total number of deaths were recorded in people aged 80 and over, 27.3% (5,326 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 16.6%, representing 3,250 deaths, in people aged 60-69. At the opposite pole, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (77 deaths), 5-19 years (52 deaths) and 20-29 years (90 deaths).
In April 2025, 5,548 marriages were registered at the civil status registry offices. The number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the agreement of the spouses was 1,416 in the same month.
