Natural increase of Romania's population stays negative in August 2025

The natural increase of the Romanian population remained negative in August this year, with a number of deaths 1.3 times higher than that of live births, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Friday, inform Agerpres.

The number of birth certificates for registered live births was higher by 812 (+6.2%), in August 2025 against August 2024, while the number of death certificates decreased by 2,557 (-12.7%), and that for children under one year of age who died was 12 lower.

At a general level, the natural increase was negative both in August 2025 (-3,610 persons) and in August 2024 (-6,979 persons).

According to the statistics, in August 2025, the death of 8,954 people (4,621 men and 4,333 women) was recorded in urban areas, and the death of 8,601 people (4,547 men and 4,054 women) was recorded in rural areas.

Compared to the same month in 2024, the number of recorded deaths decreased by 12.9% in urban areas (-12.8% for men and -13% for women) and by 12.5% in rural areas (-13.6% for men and -11.3% for women).

Also, 39.9% of the total number of deaths was recorded in people aged 80 and over, 28.3% in people aged 70-79 and 16.5% in people aged 60-69. At the opposite side of the scale, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (85 deaths), 5-19 years (59 deaths) and 20-29 years (84 deaths).

INS data reveal that, in the last summer month of this year, 16,787 marriages were registered with the civil status offices, while the number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the agreement of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure) was 2,208.
