The gross average salary in Romania reached 4,532 lei in October, increasing by 1.1 per cent against the previous month, while the net average salary increased by 1.2 per cent (+32 lei), up to 2,720 lei, showed data of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), released on Tuesday.

According to the statistics, the highest net nominal average salary was recorded in: services in information technology - including computer science activities (6,380 lei) and the smallest in hotels and restaurants (1,580 lei).

Compared with October last year, the net nominal average salary gain increased by 13.7 per cent.

In October 2018, the net average salary gain was higher in most activities of the economic sector, compared with September 2018, as a result of occasional bonuses being awarded (quarterly, annual bonuses or for special results), rights in kind and money, amounts from the net profit and other funds (including meal tickers and gift tickets). Moreover, these increases were due to achievements in productions or higher collections (depending on contracts/projects), and staff layoffs with small salaries in some economic activities.

On the other hand, the most significant drops in the net salary gain were reported in: the extraction of crude oil and natural gas (-17.2 per cent), the manufacturing of the coke oven products and products from crude oil processing (-16.2 per cent), respectively, as well as drilling activities, editing activities, activities that are auxiliary to financial brokerage, insurance and pension funds activities, manufacturing of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceuticals, production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning - between 1.5 per cent and 6 per cent.

According to the abovementioned source, the increases in the net salary gain were recorded in education (+4.2 per cent, after amounts were allocated representing the payment per hour for the teaching staff), in public administration (+0.4 per cent), healthcare and social assistance (+0.3 per cent).
