Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu qualified on Wednesday for the quarter-final of the WTA tournament in Hobart (Australia), with prizes worth 226,750 US dollars, after defeating US Varvara Lepchenko, with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Niculescu (aged 30, WTA's 95th), who came form qualifications and last year's finalist, defeated her better ranked opponent (aged 31, WTA's 64th) in one hour and 29 minutes.
The Romanian national secured a cheque worth 6,175 US dollars and 78 WTA points.
In the quarter-final, Niculescu is to face off Belgian Elise Mertens (aged 22, WTA's 36th) and 2nd seed, who won both matches against Monica, 6-3, 6-1 in Hobart final in 2017 and 6-2, 6-2 in the first round in Biel.
On Thursday also, Mihaela Buzarnescu (aged 29, WTA's 57th) is to play against US Alison Riske (aged 27, WTA's 89th).
