Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu qualified on Wednesday for the quarter-final of the WTA tournament in Hobart (Australia), with prizes worth 226,750 US dollars, after defeating US Varvara Lepchenko, with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
The Romanian national secured a cheque worth 6,175 US dollars and 78 WTA points.
In the quarter-final, Niculescu is to face off Belgian Elise Mertens (aged 22, WTA's 36th) and 2nd seed, who won both matches against Monica, 6-3, 6-1 in Hobart final in 2017 and 6-2, 6-2 in the first round in Biel.
On Thursday also, Mihaela Buzarnescu (aged 29, WTA's 57th) is to play against US Alison Riske (aged 27, WTA's 89th).
