The first evaluation of Romania after entering the Schengen area confirmed that our country is acting as a full and responsible member, "without major deficiencies that require urgent measures", declared President Nicusor Dan on Monday, after receiving, at Cotroceni Palace, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner.
"(Commissioner Brunner's) visit to our country takes place in a difficult security context, strongly felt in the region. Romania faces increasingly complex challenges every day, but it has already proven its significant contribution to strengthening the security of the European Union and will continue to act just as predictably," the head of state wrote on Facebook.
He thanked the European Commissioner for his support and involvement in the process of Romania's accession to the European free movement area.
"During the discussions, we emphasized that the first evaluation of our country carried out after entering Schengen confirmed that Romania acts as a full and responsible member, without major deficiencies that require urgent measures," the president mentioned.
Nicusor Dan stated that he discussed with Magnus Brunner the defense of the European Union's borders against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.
"We appreciate the recognition of the Black Sea region as a strategic area, on which the security of all of Europe depends, and the support received from the European level to strengthen the capacity to respond to hybrid aggression from Russia," the head of state emphasized.
"Romania has already demonstrated that it has a valuable contribution to the EU's security objectives and we are determined to maintain this trend in the future. Defending the EU's external borders remains a priority for Romania," Nicusor Dan also said on the X platform.
He added that he shared with Magnus Brunner Romania's vision regarding hybrid threats that continue to "undermine" European societies, emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation at EU level regarding countering cyber attacks, disinformation, drone attacks and the situation of critical infrastructure.
"In the current context, we also need closer coordination between defense and security priorities and resources," the president pointed out on the online platform.
