Bucharest General Mayor Nicusor Dan reiterated his decision to remain in the presidential race after meeting with Save Romania Union (USR) leader Elena Lasconi.
He said that the discussions held at the headquarters of the Save Romania Union focused on the presidential elections, the role of USR in local government and the implementation in legislation of the results of the local referendum of November 24.
"It is a period in which each of us is campaigning. Not all the polls are in yet. (...) [The candidacy, editor's note] is a decision that I made after seeing the polls. The discussion is how to optimize, so that the chances of a pro-western candidate are the best for the second round. I saw the situation in Romania, I thought whether or not I am useful in this position for the changes Romania needs and I confirmed myself with a poll, so as not to stand in the way. This was the way I made my decision," the mayor general said in a press statement on Wednesday.
He said that it is "very unlikely" that the second round of the presidential elections will include two "isolationist" candidates.
At the same time, Nicusor Dan emphasized that supporting Elena Lasconi's candidacy is a decision that belongs to USR.
The capital's mayor further said he will ask people to donate to his campaign and that he will also resort to loans, given that the state reimburses the expenses of candidates who get more than 3% in the elections.
"This is not about individuals, this is about Romania, which is going through a huge crisis of confidence in the political class, a crisis of confidence in the way state institutions function. The whole objective of this campaign is for all the candidates, including myself, to come and say what the solutions to this crisis we are going through are. A very important thing, which I believe will make the difference in this campaign, is how much volunteers will help each of the candidates. (...) A pro-Western candidate will enter in the runoff, as the data stands at the moment. Further on, what will happen between the pro-Western candidates depends on the project of each of them," Nicusor Dan added. AGERPRES
