Emeric Ienei has contributed decisively, throughout an exceptional career, to writing pages of glory for local sports, says President Nicusor Dan.

"Today, we lost one of the legendary figures of football, but his memory will always remain alive in our hearts. Throughout an exceptional career, Emeric Ienei contributed decisively to writing pages of glory for the local sport. He was part of one of the most beautiful generations of sportspeople, and under his leadership, the Steaua Bucharest team conquered the European Champions Cup, a unique moment of great prestige for Romania internationally. It was also Emeric Ienei who, in 1990, managed to qualify Romania's team, after 20 years, for a World Cup," the head of state said in a post on his X page, agerpres reports.

The President emphasizes that, "beyond his remarkable performances, Emeric Ienei was always a model of balance, elegance and nobility of soul, a personality that inspired generations through modesty, professionalism and the deep respect for the values of sport".

"Thank you, Emeric Ienei, for all the joy you brought us and for making us so proud of Romanian football so many times! (...) I send my condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues and all those who knew, admired and valued him", the head of state also wrote.

Former coach Emeric Ienei, the one whose name is linked to the success of the Steaua Bucharest football team in the 1986 European Champions Cup, died on Wednesday, at the age of 88.
