President Nicusor Dan declared on Tuesday, in Timisoara, that he would like Serbia to be part of the European Union, but added that it should meet certain standards, like any other country that wants European integration.

Asked at the Conference "Europe at the Crossroads - Security, Prosperity and Our Common Future" whether he supports Serbia's accession to the EU to the same extent as he supports this regarding the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, President Nicusor Dan replied that certain standards for the functioning of institutions are necessary, in addition to political will.

"I would like Serbia to join the European Union, but for any country that wants to join the European Union, it must have some standards for the functioning of its institutions, of justice, and there must also be a will of the political class for this step to happen. It is not an answer only for Serbia, it is an answer for all the countries in the Balkans, some started the accession process ten years ago, the progress is at different speeds", replied Nicusor Dan.

The president added that "it is a debate about how high the standards should be, but there must be some standards for the European Union", given that many of the decisions at the union level are taken by consensus, and some countries can use their veto right.
