Romania is prepared for winter, with a 96% natural gas storage percentage, a reserve in energy lakes that exceeds 2,400 gigawatts, approximately 74%, and with coal stocks higher than in 2024 by almost 206,000 tons, said on Monday the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Energy, Casian Niţulescu, president of the Winter Energy Command.

"The winter period is a period that we are obliged to get through well. We have been preparing thoroughly for some time now. I have the pleasure and pride to be the president of the National Winter Energy Command for the 3rd consecutive year. (...) I can say that for November 2025 - March 31, 2026, we are in quite good shape in terms of energy resource stocks. For natural gas, we are at a storage percentage of 96%, the reserve in energy lakes exceeds 2,400 gigawatts, as a percentage approximately 74%, on the coal side, we have much more in terms of stocks compared to 2024 with approximately 206,000 tons of coal, which means that we are quite prepared. Of course, there are also events that we cannot predict in advance, but with colleagues from the Energy Dispatch Nationally (DEN) we have different intervention scenarios.Even if in certain consumption peaks, here we are talking about evening peaks, we reach in the pessimistic strategy approximately 9,700 - 9,800 megawatts of consumption, the difference that we have to cover by importing energy may only be 4,300 megawatts. For export, we really have the possibility of 4,500 megawatts, but with the production capacity that we currently have and with the strategy imposed by us, we can also pass during these periods", said Niţulescu, at a conference on the subject.

He emphasized that Romania is registering a decrease in energy consumption, but this is both an effect of investments in re-technologies and of the increase in the number of prosumers, who in the first 10 months of the year provided over 3% of electricity production.

"In recent years, Romania has been undergoing a continuous transformation in the energy sector, and here I am referring to the decrease in energy consumption. I cannot say that it is a negative aspect, but I want to highlight, because the term prosumer is still being used, that electricity consumption has also decreased due to the increase in the number of prosumers, currently exceeding 260,000 prosumers on the electricity market, and in an analysis of the first 10 months, more than 3% of electricity production was due to prosumers. Indeed, it also causes imbalances, but overall they greatly reduce the consumption needs on the energy market. I can say that this decrease is due not only to prosumers, but also to investments in energy efficiency. Many companies, through several financing instruments, such as the PNRR, the Energy Efficiency Fund, modernization, have applied to many calls for reducing electricity consumption by re-technologizing installations. So, more and more companies, but also households, are investing in electricity production using roofs (...)", explained Nitulescu.

Focus Energetic is organizing, on Monday, in partnership with the Committee for Energy, Energy Infrastructure and Mineral Resources of the Romanian Senate, the XLIV edition of the Focus Energetic Conferences and the XIII in the cycle of those dedicated to winter preparations. The event "Winter Challenges 2025 - 2026 for the National Energy System" takes place at the Parliament.
