Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu stated on Tuesday that she fully complies with legislation on incompatibilities applicable to government members, emphasising that there is no interference between her governmental duties and her work with the Daruieste Viata Association, nor her role as a founding member of the association.
She said any contrary claims are "false and unfounded".
"I fully respect the legislation on incompatibilities applicable to government members. I suspended myself from the executive role and from the Board of Directors of the Daruieste Viata Association before assuming the office of Deputy Prime Minister, in full compliance with Law no. 161/2003. I informed the Association internally before my appointment became public, and submitted all necessary documents to formalise the decision and ensure continuity of the projects I coordinated. Every step was taken in consultation with lawyers, to ensure I respect the law and principles of public integrity," Gheorghiu explained, in response to claims made by Daruieste Viata co-founder Carmen Uscatu.
Gheorghiu clarified that she currently remains only a founding member of the association, which, according to its statute, entails membership in the General Assembly, not in the executive management structure.
"The responsibilities for managing day-to-day activities rest with the Board of Directors, of which I am no longer a member. Therefore, there is no legal incompatibility, and my status is fully compliant with the law. Romanian legislation does not require government members to give up their role as founding members of a non-governmental organisation, and there are other members of the Romanian Government who are members of NGOs," Oana Gheorghiu stated.
She recalled that she founded the Daruieste Viata Association 13 years ago, emphasising pride in its achievements.
"I founded this association 13 years ago and remain proud of everything we have built together - an independent organisation supported by over 350,000 people and 8,000 companies, which has shown that solidarity can transform Romania's healthcare system. There is no interference between my governmental duties and the activities of Daruieste Viata, and even less so regarding my status as a founding member, and any claim to the contrary is false and unfounded," the deputy prime minister went on to say.
