No financial institution can afford not to have a portfolio of green projects (official)

All the funds coming from multilateral development banks has a green and a climate component, so no financial institution at this moment can afford not to have a portfolio of such projects, senior official with Romania's Ministry of the Environment, Waters and Forestry (MMAP) Ionut Banciu told the Climate Change Summit 2023 on Thursday.

"No financial institution at this moment can afford not to have a portfolio of green projects. There are already champion companies that want the transition, that have assumed some goals, that need support from the state, because this is a partnership. The green transition and especially the just transition cannot be achieved only by the government, only by companies, but it must be an effort of the whole society and such partnerships are absolutely essential. There are EUR 29 billion at Romania's disposal. The Ministry of the Environment had to contribute, of course, with the largest green component to this effort of the government and for this reason we have these significant sources of funding at our disposal in addition to the funds from the Administration of the Environmental Fund," added Banciu.

Regarding environmental education, the official said that the Ministry of the Environment completed an awareness campaign, "in which we told people how separate waste collection should be."

"(...) If we discuss electrical and electronic waste, we have these metals that we call essential metals, transition metals, which we can recover. Recently, the European commissioner for the environment launched a communication on the reuse of essential minerals from mobile devices, from electronic devices. In addition to the policies we come up with, in addition to the fact that we are responsible for the strategy to reduce greenhouse gases, it is the first time in a year and a half that this effort is coordinated from the centre of the government," said Banciu.

The first and largest regional climate change event, the Climate Change Summit, started on Thursday in Bucharest, bringing together government officials, local administration and civil society officials from Romania.

Climate Change Summit 2023 is organised by Social Innovation Solutions between October 19 and 20 and includes a series of specialist panels in which entrepreneurial solutions, work models and sustainable projects from all corners of the world will be presented.
