No new taxes will be introduced in the coming period, the Minister of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Radu Miruta, announced on Wednesday at INVEST Summit 2025, an international event dedicated to positioning Romania on the investment map of the hospitality sector, adding that he would do everything possible to keep the VAT rate for tourism at its current level.

"It is difficult for a member of the government to stand before investors against whom the Government has introduced new taxes. But if we want to be honest, we must look at the real situation: who was responsible for reaching that point and what has been done - and what must be done - from that point on. We cannot turn back time, we cannot extend the deadline, but with professionalism we can analyse where we are and be realistic about what can be done from that position. The good news is that no further taxes will be added in the coming period. The bad news is the speed at which the government manages to collect what must be collected and to reduce public spending. I thank those of you who accepted the situation at that time. The government was in the position of having to add taxes only because otherwise it would not have been able to continue. We had a plan based on three pillars. The first pillar was to introduce taxes. The second was to reduce the money consumed by the public sector. And the third is to improve collection. We started with the first. We had a plan for the second and the third, and by the end of this year I am fairly certain the other two pillars will also be addressed," Miruta said.

He noted that VAT for tourism is currently under review at the Ministry of Finance and that every effort will be made to keep it at its current level.

"On the other hand, I must be honest: I am new to politics. I have done what I could in my professional career as a software engineer. And I cannot agree with the minimum turnover tax. I was among the ministers who, at that time, refused to sign the ordinance; because we are in a coalition, we had to. The good news is that we have managed to reopen the discussion. And in recent days we have been discussing extensively the many reasons why the current minimum turnover tax must be removed. And not because some of us disagree with it, but because there is no reason nowadays to use such a tax, even if the objective is different. Because, by using this tax, we do not achieve the objective. So what was decided two months ago - the good news, I repeat - is that it is back on the table," Radu Miruta stated.

He also announced that he intends to simplify the evaluation mechanism for research projects for next year.
