The Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) won all 21 seats in the Sfantu Gheorghe Local Council, with none of the other six political parties participating in Sunday's elections having obtained the necessary number of votes to pass the electoral threshold.
According to the results posted on the resultsvot.ro website, UDMR won the Sfantu Gheorghe Local Council with 78.84% of the votes, while the Social Democratic Party (PSD) reached 4.8%, the Save Romania Union (USR) 4.44%, the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) 3.71%, the National Liberal Party (PNL) 3.28%, and the other two Hungarian parties, the Hungarian Alliance of Transylvania and the Hungarian Civic Force, under 3%.
"This means that for the first time in the last 100 years, it seems that there will be only councillors from the UDMR in the Sfantu Gheorghe local council," said Mayor Antal Arpad, who won his fifth mandate on the Union list, with 83% of the votes cast.
He added, during a press conference, that he will propose to the "democratic parties," namely PSD, PNL and USR to agree to form a consultative council, because he believes it is important to have an institutional dialogue with the representatives of the Romanian community in the municipality which represents more than 20% of the town population.
The chairman of USR Covasna, Dulanyi-Balogh Szilard, said in a press statement that he thanks the mayor for the offer, but will decline the invitation.
PSD Covasna Chairman Bogdan Barbu told AGERPRES that this is the second time in a row that the social democrats have failed to enter the Sfantu Gheorghe Local Council and believes that the situation should be reassessed.
In turn, PNL Covasna Chairman Olimpiu Floroian told AGERPRES that the low turnout of Romanians and their lack of unity led to this situation.
In the last four years, there has been only one Romanian councillor in the Sfsntu Gheorghe Local Council, Liviu Comaneci, elected on the PNL list.
