Nuclearelectrica's Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders approved on Thursday the adoption of the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the NuScale small modular reactor (SMR) project in Doicesti, based on the project's Feasibility Study, the company informed in a report submitted to the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
Shareholders also approved the set of conditions that underpin the project's feasibility, noting that failure to meet any of them would make the project impossible to implement.
The meeting further endorsed the continuation of activities required for the Pre-EPC phase (Stage 3 of the project).
The Doicesti SMR project has advanced through all pre-established stages and corporate approvals, including site analyses, technical studies, and the completion of Front-End Engineering Design phases FEED 1 and FEED 2. These were complemented by two site-assessment missions conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which together formed the basis for the Final Investment Decision, Nuclearelectrica representatives said late last month in a post on the company's Facebook page.
"The Doicesti SMR project, based on NuScale technology, will have an installed capacity of 462 MW, consisting of six modules of 77 MW each. In an international context where SMR technologies are seen as solutions for flexibility and complementarity with renewables, as efficient alternatives for reindustrializing decommissioned power plants, as engines for local and regional development through complex supply chains, and as opportunities to train a new generation of specialists, Romania has the capacity to become a know-how hub for advanced technologies. Romania's energy security and the availability of clean energy sources remain priorities," Nuclearelectrica CEO Cosmin Ghita wrote.
In the coming period, Nuclearelectrica will intensify dialogue with commercial partners to strengthen long-term cooperation and ensure a mutually beneficial framework. The company also emphasized that discussions with Romanian authorities remain a priority in order to consolidate the support measures needed for the project.
