The National Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD) adopted a political declaration on Tuesday on assuming the fight against violence against women and recognizing femicide as a social reality.
"OFSD thus reaffirms its firm commitment to transforming the fight against violence against women into a major direction of public and legislative action. No form of abuse, aggression or discrimination can be tolerated in a society that seeks to be just, modern and based on respect. Cases of extreme violence, resulting in the killing of women, can no longer be treated as simple isolated tragedies, but as a serious social phenomenon. Femicide is the harshest expression of gender inequality and requires a firm response, a clear legal framework and coordinated action by state institutions," reads a message posted on OFSD's Facebook page.
In the text of the declaration, the social democrat women mention that the drafting of the bill on preventing and combating femicide is in the final stage - a legislative initiative initiated by OFSD and developed together with representatives of parliamentary groups within the governing coalition and in collaboration with specialists and civil society.
"The project is to be undertaken by women parliamentarians and parliamentarians from most parties and aims to consolidate the legal framework for the protection of women and strengthen the state's response to gender-based violence. OFSD believes that the state has a moral and institutional duty to intervene firmly and consistently to protect women's lives. It is time for Romanian society to unequivocally assume the fight against gender-based violence - through education, prevention, solidarity and a coherent legal framework that leaves no woman without protection. Through this approach, OFSD sends a message of responsibility and solidarity: no woman should be left alone in the face of abuse. The fight against violence against women is a fight for life, for dignity and for a fairer and safer Romania," the document also states.
