Romania's team won one gold medal, four silver medals, and two special awards at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), held this year in Paris, France, between July 17 and 25.
Ionut Gabriel Stan, a pupil at the International Computer Science High School (ICHB)of Bucharest, won the gold medal, and was also awarded two prestigious special prizes: the Special Prize for the Best Experimental Score and the Special Prize for the Best Result from the European Union, known as the Parabolic Flight Prize, the Ministry of Education announced Thursday evening on its Facebook page.
According to the same source, the following students won silver medals: Mihai Bogdan Ciocarlan, Alexandru Condrea, Rares Felix Tudose, and Mendel Emanuel Mendelsohn, all high school studying at the International Computer Science High School of Bucharest
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is one of the oldest and most prestigious global competitions dedicated to competitive physics.
Romania is among the founding countries, the first edition being held in 1967.
This year, the Olympiad gathered 406 students from 87 countries.
The Romanian team, composed of five students, was led by Delia Davidescu, teacher at the International Computer Science High School of Bucharest, and Sebastian Popescu, associate professor, PhD, at the Faculty of Physics, "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi.
This edition of the International Physics Olympiad concludes the series of four international physics olympiads Romania took part in during the 2024-2025 school year.
