Representatives of local authorities in Galati county, members of parliament and MEP Dan Nica express their concern over the critical situation of the steel mill Liberty Galati and call on the prime minister and the economy and finance ministers to intervene in this case.

An open letter addressed to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Minister of Economy Radu Miruta, and Minister of Finance Alexandru Nazare, was signed by MEP Dan Nica, the president of the County Council of Galati, Costel Fotea, the mayor of Galati, Ionut Pucheanu, senator Marius Humelnicu and MPs Bogdan Ciuca, Marius Margarit and Viorica Sandu.

"We are making a strong and responsible public appeal to you concerning the deep crisis in which the Liberty Galati steel mill is in. The plant's employees have not received their salaries, the prospects for resuming operations are increasingly bleak, and the signs of possible bankruptcy are alarming.

It is a situation of extreme gravity, which not only affects more than ten thousand families in Galati County, but jeopardizes the stability of a strategic industry at national level.

The steel plant in Galati is Romania's largest steel producer, a major contributor to the state budget, and a pillar of support for tens of thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly. Its collapse would have catastrophic effects not only on the local economy, but also on Romania's national economy and industrial security.

Therefore, we request the immediate intervention of the Romanian Government, through concrete measures and the implementation of the reorganization plan developed for the largest steel giant," states the open letter made public and sent to the press on Friday..

At the same time, the signatories of the open letter urge the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) "to reconsider its position expressed three weeks ago and to support, by vote, the restructuring plan to be approved by the Court of Galati on July 7, 2025".

"At this crossroads moment, a vote against can irreversibly block the rescue of the plant. This is a moment when we cannot allow 'Liberty' to become an industrial ruin. Galati needs support! Romania needs a functioning plant! I trust that you will treat this situation with due responsibility," the open letter further shows.
