Health Minister Alexandru Rafila said on Tuesday that so far more than 15,000 people in Romania had donated blood as part of a campaign to help war-wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians following armed attacks by the Russian Federation.

Rafila unveiled at news conference the measures taken by the Romanian Ministry of Health to help refugees from Ukraine who reach the border counties, Agerpres.ro informs.

"As far as Ukraine is concerned, the Ministry of Health is acting at the level of all border counties and support counties, which are adjacent to the border counties. We have medical teams both at the border points and where the refugees are temporarily received, so that they can be investigated or evaluated from a medical point of view. They enjoy the same rights as Romanian citizens, regardless of their status, because many do not claim refugee status but qualify for access to treatment, including hospital care, signing up for healthcare programmes, testing and vaccination for those who want. I understand that the first children of people who took refuge from Ukraine in Romania have been born," said Rafila.

He added that that more than 15,000 people had donated blood to war-wounded Ukrainian citizens.

"We have had a campaign, and I want to thank you for your support in the blood donation campaign, which has brought over 15,000 people to donate in a relatively short time, and we are also preparing to organise our own drug aid, medical supplies beyond those first quantities that we referred to in last week's presentation."

The campaign started on February 27 with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca and several members of his cabinet donating blood for war-wounded in Ukraine.
