A group of over 50 soldiers and civilians will climb on Thursday on the Caraiman Peak in the Bucegi Mts to carry the tricolour flag to the Heroes' Cross, erected in memory of the soldiers killed during the First World War.
The action continues a tradition started by the 22nd Mountain Battalion Ciresoaia and is part of the series of events dedicated to the National Flag Day, marked on June 26.
"We will start on Thursday morning, at 7:00 a.m., in front of the headquarters of the 22nd Mountain Battalion Ciresoaia in Sfantu Gheorghe and we have established as a meeting point with the other participants the parking lot of the Piatra Arsa National Sports Complex, at 8:45 a.m. We will certainly be over 50 participants, but it is very possible that there will be even more, around 60-70, if more civilians come (...) It is the fourth time we organize this ascent, the first time it took place in 2020, in addition to the action we have been organizing since 1996 around Army Day, when we carry the tricolour flag on the Moldoveanu Peak in the Fagaras Mts, the highest mountain peak in our country. The goal is to pay tribute to the heroes and to honour the national flag, but also to involve as many people as possible, to get them out into nature and to exercise. The army is close to the civilian population and helps those who want to go beyond their limits," Lt. Col. Liviu Gaita, commander of the Arcus Military Unit, told AGERPRES.
He also said that the tricolour flag that will accompany the team on Caraiman will be hoisted on the National Flag Day at the Romanian Army Monument in Sfantu Gheorghe, where the official ceremonies will take place.
The Cross on Caraiman was erected between 1926 and 1928, through the care and support of Queen Maria and King Ferdinand I of Romania and was inaugurated and consecrated on September 14, 1928, on the feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross.
In 2013, the Cross of the Heroes of the Nation of Caraiman entered the Guinness Book of Records, as the tallest cross in the world located on a mountain peak.
