Over 5,200 free medical consultations were offered, between August 11 and 16, in five seaside resorts, as part of the "Take on being healthy!" campaign, carried out by the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest.

A total of 46 volunteer doctors provided 5,218 dermatological, endocrinological, pediatric and pneumological consultations to tourists, according to a press release sent by UMFCD. The campaign was held for the fifth consecutive year. The doctors were present in the resorts of Olimp, Neptun, Saturn, Jupiter and Mangalia.

There were 1,544 dermatology consultations for melanoma screening, 699 pediatric consultations, 977 pulmonology consultations, 1,328 consultations for metabolic syndrome screening and 670 consultations for osteoporosis screening.

From a dermatological point of view, multiple suspicions related to possible tumoral conditions were detected (17 suspicions/basal cell carcinoma, 29 suspicions/actinic keratoses, 68 suspicions/atypical dysplastic nevi and 2 suspicions/melanoma.

Of the 699 children evaluated (49.1% girls and 50.9% boys), 69.5% had normal body weight, 21% were overweight, 5.5% had a high degree of obesity, and 4.5% were underweight.

Approximately 52.5% of the children assessed stated that they brush their teeth twice a day, and 26% only once a day, with the majority changing their toothbrush every 1-3 months. Most children (33.6%) have a dental check-up every 6 months.

In the area of endocrinology, 296 people (22.3% of the total number) presented with metabolic syndrome. Among men over 50 years of age, 33.3% presented with metabolic syndrome, while 37.14% of postmenopausal women were diagnosed with this condition.

Regarding arterial hypertension, approximately 45% of the tourists examined were known to have primary hypertension. Known type 2 diabetes mellitus was present in 8.43% of the tourists who participated in the screening.

Screening for osteoporotic fracture risk was performed on 670 tourists, and 31 of them (4.84%) presented an increased or very increased risk of fracture.

Regarding the body weight of the tourists, it was observed that 37.5% were overweight, 28.46% were obese, of which 3% were severely obese, grade III. Approximately 70% of those evaluated had a body weight above normal.

The Rector of the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Viorel Jinga, noted the interest of citizens in their own health, which represents an argument for continuing the campaign.

"We intend to broaden the evaluation area by bringing in new medical specialties, just as we managed to co-opt pulmonology in this edition, for which tourists' interest was significant," he declared.

The event was organized in partnership with the Romanian Society of Dermatology (SRD), the Romanian Society of Endocrinology (SRE), the Romanian Society of Pediatrics and the Romanian Society of Pneumology, with the support of the Ministry of National Defense and the Public Health Directorate in Constanta.

In the four previous editions of the campaign, 16,550 consultations were carried out, free of charge.
