More than 9.7 million calls were received at the 112 Emergency Service in 2024, one million fewer than in previous years, the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) said on Monday.
"In 2024, the number of non-emergency calls decreased by almost one million compared to previous years. STS operators in the 112 Emergency Service handled 9,763,443 calls, of which 60.45% were emergencies. The difference of 39.55% were calls that did not require the intervention of the agencies: Ambulance, Police, ISU-SMURD, Gendarmerie or Mountain Rescue," reads a STS press release sent to AGERPRES.
According to the release, this "significant" decrease reflects the efficient collaboration of the Special Telecommunications Service, the administrator of the Single National System for Emergency Calls, with the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization, the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications, mobile operators and manufacturers of mobile phones and mobile communications equipment. In the context of the evolution and diversification of IT&C solutions and services, with an impact also in the field of emergency communications, these entities have supported the adoption of measures that improve the functioning of the 112 Emergency Service.
At the same time, the STS explained, the result is also due to the partnership with the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which acted in force during the last year by penalizing those who have abusively called the single emergency number, as well as to the campaigns to raise the citizens's awareness on the use of this essential service and the efforts of the authorities to inform the population about situations requiring the intervention of emergency services.
Most of the emergencies recorded at 112 single emergency number in the 12 months of last year were medical cases - 63.39%.
The distribution of calls was as follows: Ambulance - 48%, Police - 24.57%, ISU-SMURD - 19.05%, Gendarmerie - 6.21%, other agencies - 2.17%.
The most responsible citizens who called 112 in 2024 are from Cluj county - 70.32%, followed by those from Bucharest-Ilfov - 69.09%, Bihor - 68.91%, Timisoara - 68.24% and Iasi - 67.41%.
