Special AGERPRES correspondent to Paris, France, Adrian Tone reports: Former Olympic champion Nadia Comaneci on Tuesday stated that Romania ranking 7th in the women's gymnastics team final at the Olympic Games in Paris is a positive thing for Romanian gymnastics.
"They were so confident and creative [the Romanian gymnasts - editor's note]. I am happy for them and I feel an enormous joy because this is a positive thing for Romanian gymnastics, for today's generation and for the next one. And I hope that, finally, people will have nothing to comment anymore and, even they do, it doesn't matter from now on. We hit the finals as a team after 12 years of absence and now we've ranked 7th. And it was impossible for us to jump straight to 2nd position after so many years of absence, wasn't it? The girls had difficult exercises, beautiful exercises, and good executions. They had a very difficult exercise in beam," she explained.
Nadia Comaneci saw the final from the stands, where she sit next to US former tennis player Serena Williams: "I explained Serena about gymnastics, because she was watching a gymnastics show for the very first time. She enjoyed it very much, and so did her daughter, who I believe is taking gymnastics classes."
Comaneci, who won three gold medals in Montreal, in 1976, also said that she felt a lot of joy seeing David Popovici win the gold medal in men's 200m freestyle.
"I was very happy for David Popovici. This is a historic medal, it's the first Olympic medal that we win in swimming [men's swimming - editor's note]. I congratulate him and I will be there to watch him tomorrow night too [in the men's 100m freestyle event - editor's note]," said Comaneci.
Romania's gymnastics team ranked 7th on Tuesday in the finals at the Olympic Games in Paris. Romania's previous participation with the team in a Olympic Games final took place in 2012, when it won the bronze medal.
