PARIS2024 OLYMPICS: Popovici advances to men's 100m freestyle semis third

Romanian swimmer David Popovici on Tuesday progressed to the semifinals of the men's 100m freestyle event at the Paris Olympic Games, coming in third at 47.92.

Popovici, who won Olympic gold in the men's 200m freestyle on Monday night, won the heat nine, but American Jack Alexy (47.57) and Frenchman Maxime Grousset (47.70) were faster.

China's Zhanle Pan, holder of the world record (46.80) and Olympic record (46.92, set on Saturday, in the relay race), came in 13th position in the heats (48.40).

Popovici, a former world record holder in the 100m freestyle (46.86), will compete in the semifinals today, with the final scheduled for July 31.
