Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare held talks in Washington with the leadership of US EXIM Bank on financing new strategic projects in energy and infrastructure, aimed at accelerating investments and strengthening Romania's role in regional energy security.

"I had another meeting in Washington with John Jovanovic, CEO of US EXIM Bank, continuing discussions launched last year on financing strategic projects for Romania. The resumption of these talks confirms that Romania is seen as a serious and predictable partner, and that the projects we are promoting are viewed with genuine interest by the American side," Nazare wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

According to the minister, the discussions focused primarily on accelerating existing projects and launching new major investments, particularly in the energy sector.

"In concrete terms, our discussions focused on accelerating ongoing projects and preparing new large-scale investments, particularly in the energy sector - which is essential for Romania's economic security and that of the wider region," he said.

Nazare also underlined that priority areas were reconfirmed, including continued financing for nuclear projects, covering both the modernisation of existing units and the development of new capacities; the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, including the Vertical Corridor project, in which Romania plays a key role in regional energy security; support for investments in infrastructure and industry through guarantee and financing mechanisms provided by the US side; and identifying new joint financing instruments, including via Romania's Development and Investment Bank, which could become an important vehicle for projects carried out with strategic partners.

"The projects discussed are not only about energy infrastructure. They mean safer and more affordable energy for citizens and the economy, long-term economic stability, and positioning Romania as a regional energy hub, including in the context of Ukraine's reconstruction and the development of the Black Sea region. I stressed in our discussions that Romania today has a pragmatic, results-oriented approach, and that partnerships with institutions such as US EXIM Bank are essential to turn major projects into concrete investments. We will continue to build partnerships that bring real financing and tangible projects for Romania. In the coming period, we will continue working to ensure these projects move forward as quickly as possible and deliver visible results for the economy," Nazare added.

The finance minister is attending the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC, from 14 to 20 April 2026.
