The Visit Mures Association, founded by the Mures County Council, the County Museum, and the Mountain Rescue Service Salvamont Salvaspeo, has recommended an autumn hike along the Upper Mures Valley to the Pestera Mare (Great Cave) in Andreneasa, a site unique in Romania, formed around five million years ago by volcanic activity.
"If you want a spectacular yet easy-to-follow hike, try the trail marked with a yellow dot from Andreneasa. Destination: Pestera Mare in Andreneasa and the viewpoint above, offering an incredible panorama of the valley. Duration: about one to one and a half hours (two hours round trip), medium difficulty, suitable for children from 8-9 years old. The cave formed around five million years ago through volcanic activity and is unique in Romania. Traces of wild animals (bears, wild boars) may be present, so caution is advised. From the same starting point, there is also a shorter trail leading to Pestera Casoaia lui Ladas [Ladas's Big House]," Visit Mures wrote on Facebook Tuesday.
Pestera Mare in Andreneasa sits at an altitude of 809 meters and is one of two lava caves in the Calimani Mountains, both located nearby, with the possibility of visiting both consecutively.
This cave is the larger of the two lava caves, takes its name from the village in which it is located, and features a landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions around five million years ago. Experts note that the lava flows during the eruptions burned the forest at the mountain's base, leaving traces of charred trees and sediment on the cave walls.
The Calimani Mountains contain over 100 lava caves, some less known, with Pestera Mare in Andreneasa and Casoaia lui Ladas being the largest.
The trail to Pestera Mare in Andreneasa starts from DN 15 at the exit of Andreneasa village along the Andreneasa Valley, and hikers are to follow the path marked in yellow.
