Prosecutor General Alex Florenta provided on Tuesday new details from the investigation targeting former presidential forerunner Calin Georgescu and Horatiu Potra's mercenaries.

Calin Georgescu is being investigated in two cases - one in which he was already indicted for actions against the constitutional order, and another one in which Potra and his mercenaries were ordered under pre-trial arrest.

The prosecutors are also investigating Potra's alleged meetings in Moscow, before the December 2024 election, but also how he introduced weapons and large amounts of money into the country.

The statements were made by Prosecutor General Alex Florenta after presenting the Public Prosecution Office's 2024 activity report.

PG Alex Florenta said that the prosecutors are looking into the possible involvement of statal actors in the Romanian election.

"We must probe what these interferences consist of, if they are confirmed. Beyond the elements we already have, the case prosecutor will decide whether it is necessary to expand the investigations to other facts," Florenta specified.

Investigators are also collecting information about Horatiu Potra's alleged visits to Moscow.

"There is ample evidence from this point of view. There are many elements of this type that have emerged, including from the IT searches conducted on the devices seized from the group's members. All these elements, because we are talking about a very large amount of computer data, are being analyzed in real time. All the pieces of the puzzle will be put together and we will present you with a conclusion in due time," the PG explained.

About the judge involved in Georgescu's case, he said that he cannot disclose his name, but that he is being investigated in rem for favoring the perpetrator, as he is suspected of having intervened in Calin Georgescu's favor both before and after the December election.

Florenta also stated that investigators want to find out how the weapons reached the members of Potra's group and where the 3.3 million euros found in a safe came from.

"Investigations are being carried out, including into the origin of the money and possible crimes of tax evasion and money laundering, to see what part of the money entered Romania legally, to what extent this entire financial flow was declared to the tax authorities and if the taxes due to the budget were paid," Florenta said in conclusion.
