The anti-communist rebellion in Brasov remains a landmark of resistance to injustice, reminding us of our duty, as a society, to defend and uphold citizens' rights and freedoms and to strengthen constitutional democracy as a safeguard against any form of authoritarianism, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan conveyed on the 38th anniversary of the anti-communist uprising of 15 November 1987 in Brasov.
"Thirty-eight years ago, in the midst of dictatorship, the first anti-communist revolt broke out in Brasov - a spontaneous workers' protest that rapidly turned into a broad street movement by people who showed extraordinary courage in saying 'no' to dictatorship and lies, demonstrating to the entire world that no system, however oppressive, can suppress the Romanian people's desire for freedom and dignity. This revolt, a cry of despair and an act of collective courage, broke the wall of silence imposed by the totalitarian regime and paved the way for the Revolution of December 1989, which led to the fall of the dictatorship. The anti-communist revolt of Brasov remains a benchmark of resistance to injustice, reminding us of our duty, as a society, to defend and guarantee citizens' rights and freedoms and to strengthen constitutional democracy as a form of protection against any kind of authoritarianism," Ilie Bolojan said.
The prime minister added that, in the present context, it is the responsibility of today's generations to protect historical truth and to build a resilient society founded on democratic values.
"Respect for the courage with which they confronted totalitarian oppression to restore the rights and freedoms that had been denied to Romanians for decades! Today, in a regional context marked by security challenges, disinformation campaigns and attempts to rewrite national history, we have a moral duty to protect historical truth and the memory of those who sacrificed themselves for freedom, to counter the falsification of our recent history that fuels nostalgia for a regime that violated human dignity, and to build together a resilient society grounded in democratic values," Ilie Bolojan said.
