Spokesman for Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) Andrei Tarnea has called on the Romanian nationals who fail to reach the evacuation and assisted repatriation flights in the Gulf area to announce that in advance, according to Agerpres.
"Further, both for evacuation flights and for assisted repatriation flights, a problem remains the presentation at the flight. We know that situations are difficult. For many people it is not easy to reach, but it is important to communicate, as far as possible, with those with whom they are in contact, to make sure that we have the necessary time to replace people who cannot participate in an evacuation or assisted repatriation by reallocating tickets," he said at a news conference on Monday on the latest security developments in the Middle East.
He estimated that 2,000 Romanians have returned to Romania from the Gulf area by evacuation flights, assisted repatriation flights or commercial flights. He said that on Sunday 183 Romanian nationals returned from Qatar by an assisted repatriation flight.
"It is not a reproach to the public, but it is extremely important that those who buy tickets for these aircraft use them. Or when not, release them long enough in advance, so that it is possible to reassign places, including for money, in the assisted repatriation charters, to make sure that as many Romanian nationals as possible return," he said.
He added that the authorities continue their steps to de-escalate the conflict and to ensure compliance with the principles of international law regarding the attacks "that Iran makes against non-combatant countries" in the region. MAE officials have held talks with foreign ministers and local authorities of those countries, in order to "facilitate the safety and security" of Romanian nationals in the region, as well as their return to their home country.
"Unfortunately, the exchanges of fire continue. There have been strikes, still with cruise ballistic missiles and drones, in the states of the region. The airspaces of several countries in the Middle East continue to remain either closed, operated in windows of opportunity or closed, when security conditions require it. A significant number of European citizens and Romanian nationals are still in the region," he said.
