PM Ciolacu: Fair salary, based on teachers' performance, must be accompanied by massive investments in school infrastructure

The correct, fair remuneration, based on the performance of the teachers, must also be accompanied by massive investments in the school infrastructure and in the teaching process, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated on Wednesday, at the signing ceremony of some agreement financed by the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR) intended for education endowments, through which over one billion euros will be allocated.

Thus, 2,500 agreements have been signed at the Victoria Palace related to the call for projects "Equipping with furniture, teaching materials and digital equipment of pre-university education units and related units", through which more than 5,600 schools, kindergartens, computer laboratories will be equipped, as well as school offices and workshops.

"For the first time in the history of Education, an impressive amount, over one billion euros, eligible value from the PNRR, without VAT, is allocated for the endowment of pre-university education units, including dual education," Ciolacu said.

The Prime Minister pointed out that, in addition to the salary component of the Education staff, there is also a need for endowments for the requirements of the current society.

"I am aware that, without a material base, without a modern learning process, adapted to the evolution of technology and the demands of the labour market, not even the best teacher, no matter how well paid he is, no matter how hard he tries, cannot achieve the expected results. This is the reason why the correct, fair, performance-based remuneration of teachers must also be accompanied by massive investments in the school infrastructure and in the teaching process. By signing the 2,500 contracts, we are taking an important step towards a modern education system, accessible to all children and young people in Romania, but, above all, able to help young Romanians develop their relevant skills on the labor market," the Prime Minister highlighted.

According to him, Romania can develop only through Education, only through well-prepared young people, in accordance with the evolution of technology and taking into account the requirements of the labor market.

"This is the only way this country can grow and only by developing as a country will all these young people prefer to stay here. Here, in Romania, we hope they will choose to build a future and start a family," Marcel Ciolacu added.

"I am a man who has always preferred the truth, and I don't think that hiding it under pressure does us any good. From the very beginning, we have assumed that, until now, this state has not honored its social contract and neglected education. That is why we have reached the situation we are in today, because of the mistakes made for 30 years. For this we are all obliged to correct these mistakes. The Romanian children have no fault that the state made a huge mistake and deprived them of equal opportunities. It's time now, before it's too late, to ensure equal opportunities for all children in Romania, regardless of where they were born, in the country or in the city, in a more or less economically developed area," the PM also said.
