The government has made "all the possible changes" regarding the e-VAT system, and the National Tax Administration Authority (ANAF) needs a digital overhaul, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday, amid an ongoing protest of economists and accountants.
Asked if other changes regarding the e-VAT will follow, given that the protest is exactly targeted at the relevant legislation, PM Ciolacu replied that "We have made all the possible changes. (...) We all want reforms, but when it comes to implementing them they are no longer good. The Tax Authority needs a digital overhaul after 30 years. We have been promising this for 30 years. We have the most widespread tax evasion in Europe, (...) but when we implement digitalization, we hit a sore point. Indeed, we must take care to not cause more problems for companies. I saw that the finance minister has regularly held these meetings, but we cannot cave in for the thousandth time. For 30 years we have been giving in all the time and we ended on the top position in Europe in terms of tax evasion," Ciolacu said at the premises of the Social Democratic Party.
Hundreds of economists and accountants are protesting on Monday, dissatisfied with the "pace and chaos in the tax legislation", also demanding fundamental changes in the country's tax policy.
