History's lessons need to be learned, those guilty of crimes and abuse should be punished, and the democratic resistance models during the communist era should inspire our actions, PM Nicolae Ciuca said on Wednesday, on the occasion of Day of anti-communist political detainees during the period of 1944-1989.
"We are honoring today the memory of anti-communist political detainees, those brave and worthy people that opposed dictatorship, with all their might and in a democratic way, fighting for freedom and truth. Their sacrifice led to possibility of being released from the chains of tyranny, opening our path towards democracy and progress. In communist jails and gulags, political detainees have met the hideous face of a criminal and hateful regime, being subjected to suffering that is hard to imagine, which left deep scars. The savagery which they were tortured with has forever marked their bodies and souls, but did not pervert their spirit, which remained vigilant and deeply attached to fundamental values. The murk of those times was cleared by the hope that dictatorship will be defeated, and truth and justice will triumph," Nicolae Ciuca said in his message.
He reminds that the communist regime meant "terror, deception, repression, humiliation, despair, poverty," after all "an apocalyptical universe which robbed people the chance of modernization and development for almost half a century".
"History's lessons need to be learned, those guilty of crimes and abuse need to be punished, and the models of democratic resistance from the communist period need to inspire our actions. We have the responsibility of educating the young generations in the spirit of truth and conveying them respect towards democratic values and principles," Ciuca highlighted.
"We must never forget our sinister experience with totalitarianism, and the memory policies have as goal to presenting facts, without idealization," he added.
PM Ciuca also points out that today, more than ever, we are witnesses to the horrors that were generated by revisionist aggressions, violating human rights and fundamental freedoms, norms of international law and human dignity.AGERPRES
