Liberal deputy Alexandru Muraru announced on Thursday having officially notified the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) regarding potential serious violations of the law on the financing of electoral campaigns by the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), requesting also the denial of the reimbursement of the party's electoral spending.

"The complaint, sent today to the institution, requests the halt of reimbursements of AUR's electoral expenses and the initiation of a full investigation, pursuant to Law No. 334/2006 on the financing of the activity of political parties and electoral campaigns. Public investigations, supplemented by the information presented in the complaint, outline an alarming picture of a campaign based on unpaid work, disguised propaganda and disinformation financed from murky sources," Alexandru Muraru, deputy chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and president of the PNL Iasi branch wrote on Facebook.

He pointed out that the "internship" program promoted by AUR "is in fact a form of political exploitation of young people", having been used for illegal electoral activities, including the operation of a call center and the production of political content - actions prohibited and undeclared as per law requirements.

Muraru also claims that AUR's online campaign on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook involved unreported electoral propaganda expenses "through an informal network of fake accounts, anonymous pages and ghost sites".

"These mechanisms were used to manipulate public opinion and mislead voters during the electoral campaign, including through disinformation about other candidates," Muraru argues.

According to him, "Romania can no longer tolerate a party that builds its electoral capital on lies, fanaticism and law violation".

"AUR is not an anti-system party, it's an anti-state party. When you turn the youth into propaganda tools, when you use public resources for electoral gain and when you manipulate public opinion through non-transparently financed disinformation campaigns, you are not a democratic actor - you are a danger to democracy. I call on the Permanent Electoral Authority to act with all firmness and block the reimbursement of any amount derived from illegal expenses. The law must be the same for everyone - even for the loudest barkers of patriotism," Muraru also wrote.
