PNL Chairman Ludovic Orban considers that the amendment to the laws of justice, as well as the actions taken by the party in power, represent "a threat" to democracy.
"We are really facing a threat to democracy. Those who are in power today (...) are some groups who are deeply disturbed by everything that is an independent institution in Romania means and are deeply disturbed by any free man, or any prosecutor, or any citizen who (...) does not obey them, trying to make them answer for what they have done. There is a red thread to occupy all the public institutions. Look at the Court of Accounts, at the Financial Supervisory Authority, we have had a clear demonstration of political use of the Financial Supervisory Authority (...), at the [state-owned] television station they were not content that they put once a man of theirs. When a show was made that they were not pleased with or the institution has retained some independence, they changed it and brought an interim [director]," Orban said at a debate on the laws of justice organized by the Social Dialogue and Group and Magazine 22 on Tuesday.
He considered that this draft amendment is "a very strange attempt", because if it had been a government project, it would normally have followed a procedure, would have been publicly assumed by the minister of justice.
The liberal leader believes that the Government has amendments also in the drawer, because their goal is to change everyone who heads prosecutor's offices.
"They are capable even of changing the president with an interim president to be able to change the heads of the prosecutor's offices, who is none other than the Senate's speaker, and in terms of the legislation, as it is done, is a basis for much larger and more serious actions. The war that has been waging for at least three years with some unimaginable weapons against everything that institution means, including institution in the field of justice, risks to seriously affect the evolution of the society," Orban said.AGERPRES .
