Former Pocol Castle, located in the Borcut Valley, will undergo a rehabilitation process through a funding worth 23 million lei secured by the Agency for Regional Development - ADR Nord-Vest, Baia Mare Mayor Doru Dancus announced on Friday.

"There has been a lot of talk about Pocol Castle. (...) Just 5 months after securing the funding, we signed the design and execution contract for the restoration and rehabilitation of one of the most emblematic heritage buildings, a place rich in culture and history, a gem of our city. We have gone through all these steps in a short time because, as with other projects, we launched the public procurement procedures with suspensive clauses before securing the actual funding. Moreover, although the estimated value of the project exceeds 23 million lei, including VAT, funded by ADR Nord-Vest, the execution contract is valued at just over 13 million lei. Much lower than the estimated value, with a contractor experienced in restoring such historical buildings," said Doru Dancus.

According to the mayor, the project is expected to be completed in 20 months, and by the end of 2026, Pocol Castle could host its first cultural event.

The castle belonged to Alexiu Pocol, a former owner of a gold mine, and was built in 1903.

Pocol, a teacher by training, was for a period the mayor of Baia Mare, and according to documents of the time, he is said to have provided the gold needed to make the crowns for Queen Marie and King Ferdinand.

Over time, the castle has hosted notable figures and events, including the historian Nicolae Iorga, who, traveling through Transylvania, stopped at the castle to rest.
