The mayor of Ploiesti, Mihai Poliseanu, requests the urgent intervention of the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, on the issue of pollution, the mayor indicating that there is a need to update the legislation and take concrete measures against recurrent polluters....
"I publicly request the urgent intervention of the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu/Ministry of the Environment - Romania: let's update the legislation to WHO 2021 standards, expand real (not punctual) monitoring and impose concrete measures against recurrent polluters. The health of the people of Ploie?ti is non-negotiable and cannot wait for the next episode of 'legal' pollution. We need action now - strict controls and a real protection plan!", a post on the mayor's Facebook page states.
His request comes in the context in which the Prahova Environmental Protection Agency sent the municipality the results of the first four days of air quality monitoring carried out by the APM mobile laboratory in the Ploiesti Vest Municipal Park.
The results show that no exceedances of legal limits were recorded.
"Sounds reassuring, doesn't it? As if we could breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that benzene, that notorious carcinogen, is 'only' at 2.5 ľg/m3 - below the annual limit of 5 ľg/m3, but enough to remind us of the risks of leukemia and other cancers, as shown by studies and WHO guidelines. Or PM2.5, with daily average values of up to 8.5 ľg/m3, which, although 'in compliance' with our outdated law, are dangerously close to WHO recommendations (5 ľg/m3 annually) and are associated with cardiovascular disease, aggravated asthma and premature deaths. Let's not forget hydrogen sulfide (H2S), at levels that do not exceed the 1987 standards (!), but high enough (up to 0.010 mg/m3) to cause olfactory discomfort, pain headaches and irritations - a daily 'gift' for our families, especially children and the elderly," the mayor also wrote on Facebook.
