President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday that, in a historical context marked by growing tensions and a tendency to transfer the responsibility of personal or social failures to others, it is essential to combat the antisemitic and xenophobic discourse that incites hatred.
"Today, we commemorate a tragic event in our history, in which many people died, many families suffered immensely for the simple reason that they had other ethnicity. At a time in history when we can see growing tensions and see the same tendency to blame the other one for personal or social shortcomings, we have the obligation to remember and preserve the memory of this tragic event, we have the duty to combat, through all means, the antisemitic discourse, the xenophobic discourse and hate-inciting discourse," President Nicusor Dan said at the commemoration ceremony of the victims of the Holocaust, organized by the "Elie Wiesel" National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania.
He mentioned that, in a context in which forces hostile to democracy seek to deepen tensions and divisions between social, cultural and ethnic groups, tolerance must be promoted in the public space.
"And at a time when forces hostile to democracy are attempting to deepen all tensions and all divisions between the social, cultural, ethnic groups of our society, we have the obligation to encourage tolerance and inclusive discourse in our public actions. It is an obligation we have toward the memory of the victims and all those who suffered. Therefore, let us safeguard the memory of these people, preserve the memory of these sufferings and act so that these things never happen in Romania again," President Nicusor Dan concluded.
