Discussions within the coalition regarding magistrates' pensions are nearing a compromise and a meeting on several current matters will probably take place next week, Romania's President Nicusor Dan said on Friday.
'In my opinion, the discussions are close to reaching a compromise. From the information I have, the compromise is quite near. There are several aspects under discussion, and obviously I am not going to tell you now what each party's position is or what they have communicated to me. We will very likely have a meeting next week on several issues related to current activity, as well as the start of discussions on the 2026 budget,' said Nicusor Dan when asked about the negotiations concerning magistrates' pensions and whether he would summon the coalition leaders for talks following the Constitutional Court's reasoning.
Regarding the risk of losing money from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan because of this milestone, the President said that 'we must be optimistic' about it.
Nicusor Dan said that, in his view, the reform of magistrates' pensions can be completed by 28 November, as there is enough time for the Government to assume the bill before Parliament and for it to be debated through a fast-track procedure, but the question remains 'whether someone will later challenge it before the Constitutional Court and how long it will take there.'
As for the proposal to raise the pension threshold to 75% of salary for magistrates, the head of state said that this issue is under discussion.
