President Nicusor Dan expressed his belief on Tuesday that the law regarding magistrates' pensions would come into effect.

Asked in an interview with Cotidianul, published on Tuesday, whether the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) would approve the legislation, assuming the Government sent it to Parliament in the same form after receiving the opinion of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), the head of state said: "I cannot anticipate what the Constitutional Court will vote. What I can say is that there is political will across all coalition parties, I see no fundamental differences and that this law will pass. I am convinced it will pass."

In his view, the involvement of interim president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sorin Grindeanu in this bill is natural.

"I do not believe there is anything wrong with this. I believe that, on any type of bill, any political party represented in Parliament can appropriately engage with any of the relevant actors in the area," President Nicusor Dan explained.

According to the president, a referendum on this matter is not a solution.

"I do not believe the additional tension caused by this law was generated by (the pension) 70 or 75 percent (of the salary). I think it is something that can be discussed. However, it is absolutely necessary for this law to pass and that is why a referendum has no say, because it is something everyone knows, agrees on, pensions need to be reduced," President Nicusor Dan stated.
