President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday that it is important for Bucharest to have a mayor who believes in Western values and who "refuses to collude with the real estate mafia".
"I believe it is important both for Bucharest and for Romania - even if these elections are for a two-and-a-half-year term, they carry symbolic significance for Romania - to have a mayor who believes in Western values. I think it is important to have a mayor who knows how to manage public money, and I think it is important to have a mayor who refuses to collude with the real estate mafia, because at last, at the level of the Capital City Hall, after many years of excess, we have managed to put things somewhat in order, and it would be a pity to backslide," the president said.
The head of state stressed the importance of debates during the campaign for electing a new mayor of the Capital, but recalled that he himself had refused to take part in such a discussion in the past.
"Any debate is necessary, especially when candidates are very close in the polls. But, as you know, I did not want to attend a debate in 2024, so I am not going to start condemning everyone who chooses not to participate. Clearly, any debate is necessary, all the more so as the elections are held in a single round and the candidates' scores are close," Nicusor Dan stated.
