President Dan to attend Timisoara Cities Summit

President Nicusor Dan will attend on September 30 the Timisoara Cities Summit, a meeting where participants will discuss the future of the European Union and the role of cities in its expansion.

"I am very glad that the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, has accepted Timisoara's invitation to participate next week in the Timisoara Cities Summit. We will have mayors, ambassadors and leaders from 15 European countries - EU members and candidate countries - here to discuss the future of the European Union and the role of cities in its enlargement. It is with great pride that Timisoara becomes the place where Europe asks its important questions about the present and the future," Timisoara City Mayor Dominic Fritz wrote on Friday in a social media post.

Attending the summit will be mayors of European capitals, officials of the European institutions, ambassadors, politicians and analysts.

In the first part of the summit, the mayors will participate in debate sessions on issue such as the enlargement of the European Union, continental security, the European Green Deal and the direct financing of cities. The summit will conclude with the signing of a joint statement by the mayors of the EU and the candidate countries to underline the essential role of cities in the enlargement process.

Among the mayors who confirmed their presence are Vassil Terziev (Sofia, Bulgaria), Gergely Karacsony (Budapest, Hungary), Tomislav Tomasevic (Zagreb, Croatia), Andriy Sadovyi (Lviv, Ukraine), Roman Klichuk (Chernivtsi, Ukraine), Nicolae Dandis (Cahul, Moldova), Dusan Raicevic (Bar, Montenegro), Ivan Gulam (Pirovac, Croatia).

Subsequently, at Timis Cinema Hall, a public conference "Europe at a Crossroads - Security, Prosperity, and Our Common Future" will take place. Attending the conference will be Anitta Hipper, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security, Katalin Cseh, member of the Hungarian Parliament, Lyudmyla Tautiyeva, public policy consultant from Ukraine, journalist John Kampfner.
