President Klaus Iohannis stated on Friday, at the reception occasioned by the National Day of Romania, that 2017 was a complex year, marked by "large social convulsions" and challenges that put under the question mark Romania's progresses in the fight against corruption and the functioning of the rule of law.
"2017 was a complex year, marked both by a special symbolism and large social convulsions. Ten years have passed since the accession to the European Union, period in which our country has emerged from the shadow cone, proving that it can be a trusted partner that observes the commitments it took on and a pillar of stability in the region. The 10 years of membership in the great European family have brought multiple benefits and have shown that there is no future for Romania outside the European project. However, internally, there have been many challenges that questioned Romania's progress in the fight against corruption and the functioning of the rule of law, but also economic progress," the President said.
The head of state revealed that after the events which occurred at the beginning of the year, he had seen a Romania that was more united than even around some values and principles.
"I was telling you here, exactly a year ago, that a stable country means independent justice, functional economy and fight against corruption. Only days after that moment, when these values were endangered by the Government's intention to amend the Justice laws, Romanians hit the streets in an impressionable number in order to protect them. Harsh words were used to describe what happened at the beginning of this year - cleavage, separation, rupture. Apparently, a divided Romania, just before the Centenary, situated opposite to the country that in 1918 succeeded the Greater Union. I, on the contrary, have seen in the events at the beginning of this year, but also in the ones that occurred a couple of days ago, a Romania more united than ever around values and principles, a country awakened and determined, with citizens who manifested to defend democracy and the rule of law, having only one thing in mind: the future of their country. The existence of an active society, capable to sanction the politicians' errors and slips, and to clearly support their expectations is the big win of the year that is about to end," Iohannis said.
The President believes that the civil society has come of age and, unfortunately, it doesn't find itself in the part of the political class that "still believes it can abuse power."
"The unprecedented civil mobilization in the post-communist era is proof of the full maturity of the Romanian society. Maturity which, unfortunately, doesn't find itself in that part of the political class still believing that it can abuse power and act without any responsibility for partisan purposes. There are those politicians who want to keep Romania captive in the past for their own personal benefit and who are willing to make any compromises to reach their goals, even if this means diverting Romania from its Euro-Atlantic course," Klaus Iohannis stated.
