President Iohannis paying visit to Danube Delta on Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Day
President Klaus Iohannis will pay a visit to the Danube Delta on Friday, on the occasion of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (RBDD) Day.
"Through the great variety of flora and fauna, the Danube Delta is an objective of major interest for national and international biodiversity," says the Presidential Administration.
The visit to the Danube Delta confirms President Klaus Iohannis' constant concern for issues related to the environment, biodiversity conservation and limiting the effects of climate change at national and international level, the source said.
"The objectives of protecting the rich flora and fauna must be harmoniously combined with the social and economic development of the communities living in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve," the Presidential Administration says.
According to the quoted source, apart from plastic pollution or insufficient exploitation of natural resources from a sustainability perspective, the Danube Delta has also faced in recent years the negative impact of climate change, the consequences of which - long periods of drought, deteriorating water quality and dwindling fish stocks - endanger the unique biodiversity of the Delta as well as the well-being of the communities living in the region.
"From this perspective, the visit of the President of Romania has also the role to contribute to finding solutions to the challenges facing the Delta and to mobilise relevant actors in the implementation of optimal measures," the source said.
In this regard, the head of state will meet in Tulcea with central and local authorities, representatives of the scientific and non-governmental environment, because "protecting the Danube Delta needs everyone's involvement, beyond political affiliations and short-term priorities." President Iohannis will also visit the Somova-Parches Lake Complex.
"The value of the natural heritage of the Danube Delta has been recognised by its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List and the Ramsar Convention List. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is also included in the European network of protected natural areas, being a Natura 2000 site," the Presidential Administration added.
