Approximately 20,600 inmates stated their intention to vote on Sunday in the second round of the presidential election, the National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) told AGERPRES on Friday.

According to the same source, on Thursday, in the places of detention under the ANP, 24,689 persons deprived of their liberty were detained, and of these, 22,606 were identified as having the right to vote in the presidential election. The remaining 2,083 prisoners do not have the right to vote. Of the persons deprived of their liberty with the right to vote, 20,596 expressed, in writing, their intention to vote.

According to the Decision no. 6D of September 24 of the Central Electoral Bureau, prisoners may submit their written requests to vote through a special ballot box, which shall be submitted to the directors of the places of detention, no later than the day before the election, Saturday, at 10.00 am.

Persons deprived of their liberty who have previously not expressed their intention to vote or have refused to do so may reconsider this decision, meaning that they may submit a new written request to exercise this right. The request will be approved by the president of the polling station.

At the level of each detention unit, an appropriate space will be arranged for the placement of ballot boxes and voting booths, taking into account the approximate number of detainees participating in the elections, to which access will be allowed to the team of the electoral office of the polling station, which will move with the special ballot box, the extract from the electoral list, an ink pen, the stamp with the mention "Voted", ballot papers and self-adhesive stamps necessary to carry out the voting, as well as with the tablets for registration in the IT System for monitoring the presence at the vote and preventing illegal voting (as the case may be).

In order to ensure a smooth conduct of the voting process, the Director General of the ANP sent an address to the detention units regarding the necessary organizational measures: establishing an inter-institutional link between the directors of the places of detention and the electoral authority in the constituency; arranging an appropriate space within the units for the placement of ballot boxes and voting booths; taking all necessary steps to issue identity documents to persons with the right to vote who do not possess them or to replace those whose validity period has expired; ensuring the necessary personnel to maintain order and discipline among persons deprived of their liberty and prevent the occurrence of negative events, throughout the duration of their voting.
