Over 18 million Romanian citizens with a right to vote are expected to go to the polls on Sunday to elect the new president for the next five years.

According to the Permanent Electoral Authority, there are 18,968 polling stations organized in the country.

If the voter is in the administrative-territorial unit where he has his domicile or residence, he can vote only at the polling station to which the street or locality where he has his domicile or residence is assigned, according to the law; if he is in another administrative-territorial unit than the one where he has his domicile or residence, he can vote at any polling station within it.

If he is abroad, he can vote at any polling station organized abroad.

Romanians in the diaspora can vote starting on Friday.

If the voter has reduced mobility, he or she may vote at any polling station that he can access easier.

Voting in the country for the presidential election begins on Sunday, at 7.00 am, and ends at 9.00 pm. Voters who are at the polling station at 9.00 pm, as well as those who are in line outside the polling station to enter the polling station, may exercise their constitutional right until 11.59 pm at the latest.

Voters vote with an identity document valid on the day of voting, issued by the Romanian state: identity card; electronic identity card; provisional identity card; identity card; diplomatic passport; electronic diplomatic passport; service passport; electronic service passport; military service card (in the case of students from military schools).

The simple passport, the simple electronic passport and the simple temporary passport may be used to exercise the right to vote only by Romanian citizens who vote abroad or by Romanian citizens with domicile abroad who vote in Romania.

The voter who, for objective reasons, caused by illness or disability, attested by documents, cannot travel to the headquarters of the polling station organized in the country, may submit a request to vote through a special ballot box. In order to do that, the voter must submit a request to the polling station to which the address of the building she/he has his/her domicile is assigned and a team consisting of at least two members of the electoral bureau will come to her/him, on the day before the election, between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm.

Voters who, on election day, are in the country and who, due to the specific nature of their work, cannot appear at the polling station may exercise their right to vote through a special ballot box. In this case, the voting application will be accompanied by a certificate issued by the employer stating that, on the election day, the voter cannot leave the workplace between 7.00 am and 9.00 pm. It is not mandatory for the employer to stamp the certificate.

Voters who, on election day, will be hospitalized in a public or private health facility, a home for the elderly or other such public or private social institutions may also request to exercise their right to vote through a special ballot box.

Detained persons, persons held under a pre-trial detention warrant and persons serving a custodial sentence, but who have not lost their electoral right, may also vote through the mobile ballot box.

Persons under house arrest may exercise their right to vote through a special ballot box, provided that they submit a request to ask for it, at the latest on the day before the voting between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm, at the electoral office of the nearest polling station.

Two candidates remained in the final race for the Cotroceni seat - Calin Georgescu (independent) and Elena Lasconi (USR - Save Romania Union). The first round, in which 14 candidates participated, was challenged with the Constitutional Court of Romania, and the Court decided to recount the votes. Subsequently, the CCR validated the results of the November 24 election.
