The independent candidate for the presidency Calin Georgescu said on Thursday that he is glad with the attention that the U.S. is paying to the events in our country and urged his supporters not to give in to "provocations", informs Agerpres.
"Of course, I am glad that our main partner, the United States of America, is carefully monitoring the situation in our country. Of course, we will never allow any intervention by any state in the internal and democratic affairs of our country, but as president I will always look with admiration and friendship towards the United States of America and the Trump Administration and we will always be united by the same values and ideals", Georgescu said in a video message on his Facebook account.
The U.S. State Department expressed its concern regarding the elections in Romania, after declassified Supreme Council for Country Defense (CSAT) documents on Wednesday showed external interference in the electoral process.
The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said on Thursday that the Romanian authorities are uncovering a large-scale and well-financed Russia's effort to influence the recent presidential elections, in a speech given at a ministerial meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), organized in Malta.
Georgescu said, in his video intervention, that "Romania will be a bridge of stability"
"I will assure you as many times as necessary that we will not leave NATO, we will not leave the European Union, but on the contrary, we will become stronger within these institutions, as it is natural and no one will violate your democratic rights under my presidency, if this is voted on this Sunday. Romania will be a bridge of stability and security for the whole world. It will be a prosperous country, totally dedicated to democratic values", Georgescu said.
He urged his supporters to stay down.
"I'm asking you for one thing - don't give in to the provocations of these days and especially those of this evening", Georgescu pointed out.
Several actors and singers are expected to participate in the "Romania HOPE!" event, which is taking place on Thursday, from 8:00 p.m., in the University Square, being, according to the organizers, "a civic marathon about freedom and democracy''.
