The Mayor General of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, an independent candidate in the presidential elections, was present on Sunday afternoon at a polling station in Regie district, (western part of Bucharest, ia place where student dormitories and facilities are concentrated, editor's note, to welcome the young people who went to the polls in large numbers.

"This is an important moment for Romania and it is normal to be nervous. (...) I am very happy [about so many young people voting - editor's note]. It means that they have realised the turning point Romania is living today and I am very happy," Nicusor Dan told the press.

Nicusor Dan mentioned that this was one of the most crowded polling stations in Bucharest and said he was impressed by the fact that students turned out in large numbers to vote. He noted a ‘very good' mobilisation of voters both in the diaspora and in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, he urged Romanians to continue to go to the polls.

"I urge them to go. Voting habits have changed. Some who used to go out in the afternoon, for fear of queues, came in the morning," he remarked.

The mayor of Bucharest said that on Sunday Romanians are choosing between the West and Russia, between ‘a civilisation of dialogue' and one of ‘tension and social fragmentation'.

"It is a choice between an economy connected with the economies of the world and a very isolationist one. It is a choice between a civilisation of dialogue and one of social tension and fragmentation. It is an important moment. (...) I am fully aware of my responsibility because this is a difficult time, especially economically, but also in terms of security," he said.
