Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia represented Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, at the funeral of Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark on Monday, the Royal Family announced on Facebook.
The funeral service was held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, attended by members of the Greek Royal Family as well as representatives of the royal houses of Spain, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Bavaria, Romania and Serbia.
The burial took place in the afternoon at the Royal Cemetery of Tatoi, in the presence of family and royal guests. Later in the day, Princess Sofia joined the memorial service offered by the Greek Royal Family.
Born in 1942, Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark was the youngest child of King Pavlos and Queen Frederica of the Hellenes and a first cousin of King Mihai of Romania.
An erudite intellectual, she devoted her life to philosophy, archaeology, history, literature and foreign languages. She was also a gifted pianist and an advocate of social causes.
She founded the organization Mundo en Armonía, which she led for several decades.
The Romanian Royal Family has long maintained close ties with the Greek Royal Family. Queen Mother Elena, King Mihai, Queen Anne and their daughters were always closely connected to their Greek relatives across generations, the statement noted.
Princess Irene visited Romania on several occasions and often met King Mihai and Queen Anne, as well as the Custodian of the Crown Margareta and Prince Radu, during family gatherings in Geneva, Madrid, Athens, Belgrade and London.
In 2007, Princess Irene of Greece and Prince Radu joined Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on a scientific visit to the North Pole.
