The law that provides for the declaration of 2025 as the Year of Cardinal Iuliu Hossu, for the celebration of his life, work, personality, martyrdom and his determining role in achieving the Great Union and the efforts made to save the Jews during the Holocaust was promulgated, on Tuesday, by President Klaus Iohannis.

Iuliu Hossu was bishop of the Diocese of Cluj-Gherla within the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic, cardinal, senator by law in the Romanian Parliament, honorary member of the Romanian Academy and political prisoner during the communist regime.

Iuliu Hossu is one of the seven Romanian Greek-Catholic bishops, martyrs of communist prisons, who were beatified. Their memory was celebrated during the visit of Pope Francis to Blaj, in June 2019.

On the occasion of the celebration of the Year of Cardinal Iuliu Hossu, cultural, diplomatic, artistic or educational events are organized.

The Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Government, the authorities of the central and local public administration, as well as the public institutions under their subordination or coordination, the Romanian Television Company, the Romanian Broadcasting Company can allocate funds from their own budgets to organize or support logistically and/or financially cultural, diplomatic, artistic, educational events or promotion programs organized within the limits of approved budget allocations
