Social Democratic Party (PSD) President Sorin Grindeanu met on Thursday in Brussels with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. Within the talks, Grindeanu explained that the Social Democrats have launched a wide-ranging internal consultation aimed at reviewing the ten months of governance.
"Today, in Brussels, I discussed with Ms Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, the protection of the population and the economy from the dramatic rise in fuel prices, which must represent a major government priority. I told Ms Metsola that delays in implementing some solutions already adopted by other European countries, solutions that have tempered price increases, could affect the performance of the pro-European government and provide fuel to extremist and populist forces. At the same time, I explained to the President of the European Parliament that the PSD has launched a broad internal consultation reviewing the ten months of governance, starting with the PSD representatives in the Executive," Grindeanu wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that the PSD's clear intention is to continue a pro-European government, but "a functional one, with a prime minister who can deliver confidence and hope to the population - not only austerity."
"I reaffirmed that we rule out any form of political collaboration with the AUR [Alliance for Romanians' Union party] and that we follow with concern the increasingly frequent signs of rapprochement between the prime minister's party [National Liberal Party - PNL] and the leaders of the extremist formation led by George Simion. Such a PNL-AUR closeness represents a threat to the future of any pro-European coalition and a danger to Romania's European future," Grindeanu mentioned.
